Hello from British Columbia, Canada -  (19th November 2018)

My father Allan Dann was born in Haslingden on Jan 14th 1919.  He will be 100 this January.  He is suddenly curious about where he is from, a bit late but I am trying to get what I can.  Other than being very deaf, he lives on his own and still drives.  An alert 100!
His mother was Anne Dann (Parkinson) of 10 Store Street, His father was John Dann who I believe was born in Accrington.  Annie Parkinson worked in the family bakery on Blackburn Road.  My grandfather had left England as a young man but his family were cotton mill workers and I know some came out to set up mills in the US.  In any case what I am search for is a photo old or new of 10 Store Street or the building where the bakery was.

John Dann died when my dad was only 7, and I think that is why my dad has been so reluctant to engage with his family history or where he was born.  If there is anything you have that might be interesting for him it would be greatly appreciated.  The photos below are a few from my Grandmothers autograph book, I thought the illustrators might be of local interest.  There are more

Thank you
Barb Dann.

From Liz Taylor (19th November 2018)

Haslingden's Liz Taylor has kindly shared with us two of her more recent paintings.  One of the steps up to Holcombe which I am sure many a Haslingden/Helmshore folk will have traversed, and also she has done the beautiful train "City of Wells" which has run on on the nearby East Lancashire Railway. Also I will archive these paintings under Liz's gallery within the HASLINGDEN IN ART

View from Holcombe Hill by Liz Taylor
(Mail kindly sent through from Mike Ryan 8th November 2018)

As we quite rightly remember the fallen on Remembrance Sunday, so we should also think about those who also served and returned. Attached is a copy of the transfer papers in 1917 for my Grandad Ryan. As you can see he was found not fit to return to active service after recovering from gunshot wounds, but transferred to physical training. At that time he would be 31. I presume the group photo is the graduation class in March 1917. The record shows previous service of almost 10 years, which is probably when the younger photograph was taken. It may have been in India. He was not the only family member to be wounded only to return to service, as did many men from the town.

“Spion Kop”

These lines are dedicated to those Brave Comrades who nobly gave their lives in the ever memorable Battle of Spion Kop which took place on January 24th 1900.

1)     Will you kindly pay attention,
        To my story, sad but true;
A few words I will mention,
That concerns both me and you.

2)     It was on the 23rd of January.
As we rested behind Three Tree Hill,
That the order came along the line,
Which caused many a heart to thrill.

3)    Spion Kop had to be taken,
By the lads of the Lancashire Brigade,
With the Twentieth in front to hear the brunt,
The assault had to be made.

4)    The Kings Own and the Fortieth,
       Who never yet knew fear,
With the T.M.J’s and the Sapper Boys,
Gave their aid the hill to clear.

5)   Along the uneven ground we marched,
       In silence deep as death;
And when we got to the hill,
We halted to take our breath.

6)   With bayonets fixed, we crept along,
And pressed on with a will,
For to uphold Old England’s honour,
       And to avenge Majuba Hill.

7)   When the summit we had gained,
Many a heart was beating fast.
And in the damp cold morning air,
      The challenge came at last.

8)  Halt! Who goes there? A voice rang out,
      In a tongue both strange and queer;
A rifle shot, a bayonet charge,
      And a gallant “British Cheer”.

9)      On, on we charged; the enemy fled,
          The hill was ours at last;
All hopes rose high as the morn drew nigh,
For the danger that was past.

10)    Alas our hopes were soon dispelled
As we soon found to our cost,
For the Boers again tried to retake,
          The position they had lost.

11)    As through the clouds the sun appears,
          Driving the mist away,
All hearts beat fast, for low at last,
We hold the Boers at bay.

12)    The Lancashire’s and Engineers,
          And T.M.J’s as well,
          Line the trenches all around,
          Their lives to dearly sell.

13)    The battle raged both fierce and fast,
          Throughout the livelong day;
And ere the sun set in the west,
Many a soul had passed away.

14)    Their’s many a mother in dear old England,
Who will often shed a tear.
When she thinks of her boy – her hope and joy,
But from whom she no more will hear.

15)    Far, far away, over the hill,
In Natal a resting place they’ve got,
And these they lie, side by side,
On the heights of Spion Kop.

Composed by M. Walsh, 2nd Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers
Presume written by a Haslingden soldier in the Boer War

Another beautiful poem written by a Haslingden soldier serving in South Africa in the late 1890s. The original is done in pencil on writing paper and penned in script.  We are indebted to Jane Siddall for kindly sharing these rare “soldiers poems”.

***********************************

Spartan Mother

“One more embrace; then o’er the main
And nobly play the soldiers part,”
Thus speaks, amid the martial strain,
The Spartan mother’s aching heart,
She hides her woe,
She bids him go,
And tread the path his father’s trod,
“Who fights for England, fights for God”.
Helpless to help, she waits, she weeps,
And listens for the far-off fray,
He scours the gorge, he scales the steeps,
Scatters the foe-away; away!
Feigned, as their flight,
Smite! Again smite!
How fleet their steeds! Now nimbly shod,
She kneels, she prays; “Protect him God”,
The sisters sigh, the maiden’s tear,
The wife’s the widow’s stifled wail,
These nerve the hand, these brace the spear,
And speed them over veld and vale.
What is to him,
Or life or limb,
Who sends the chain, and breaks the rod,
Who falls for freedom, falls for God.
And should it be his happy fate,
Hale to return to home and rest,
She will be standing at the gate,
To fold him to her trembling breast,
Or should he fall,
By ridge or wall,
And lie neath some green southern sod.
“Who dies for country, sleeps with God.

No 3714 Private John Thomas Lambert, E Company,

"A Poem written by a HASLINGDEN soldier called Jonathan Lambert on February 5th 1894, who was in the Lancashire Fusiliers and fighting the wars in South Africa. (kindly contributed to the blog by Jane Siddall . The original is on paper and penned out in beautiful script (a sample shown below)
1) The cottage was a thatch'd one,
the outside old and mean,

yet everything within that cottage,

was wondrous neat and clean
2) The night was dark and stormy,
the wind was howling wild,
A patient mother knelt beside,
the death bed of her child
3) A little worn out creature,
His once bright eyes grown dim,
It was a colliers only child,
they called him little Jim
4) And oh to see the briny tears,
fast hurrying down her cheek,
As she offer'ed up a prayer in thought,
she was afraid to speak
5) Least she might waken one she loved,
far better than her life,
for there was all a mothers love,
In that poor colliers wife
6) With hands uplifted see she knelt,
beside the sufferers bed,
And prays that he will spare her boy,
And take herself instead
7) She gets her answer from the child,
Soft fell these words from him,
Mother the angels do so smile,
And beckon little Jim.
8) I have no pain dear Mother now,
But oh I am so dry,
Just moisten poor Jim's lips again,
And Mother don't you cry
9) With gentle trembling haste she held,
the tea cup to his lips,
he smil'd to thank her as he took,
three little tiny sips.
10) Tell father when he comes from work,
I said good-night to him,
and mother now I'll go to sleep,
Alas poor little Jim.
11) She saw that he was dying,
the child she loved so dear,
had uttered that last words that she,
might ever hope to hear.
12) The cottage door was opened,
the colliers step was heard,
the Mother and the father met
yet neither spoke a word.
13) He knew that all was over,
He knew his child was dead
He took the candle in his hand,
And walked towards the bed.
14) His quivering lips gave token,
Of grief he'd fain conceal,
And to see his wife has joined him,
the stricken couple kneel
15) With hearts bowed down with sadness,
they humbly ask of him,
In heaven once more to meet again,
their own poor little Jim
At the end of the poem is a little note:

Dear Hannah I got little Jim,

because you ask me for it

write back and let me know,

how you are getting at home

If you can provide further information it would be great.

Yes it was Haslingden originally started in the basement of a house on Manchester road I think as a sideline with a recipe given by a relative , they were farmers from trough of Bowland area !

************************

If my memory serves me correctly Haworth’s Ice Cream was situated in a house in the first long row on the left hand side of Manchester Road after Fields Road (Road End).Haslingden
I lived at 13 Holly Avenue (off Fields Road),which backs on to Manchester Road, until July 1936 and I remember as a child watching the pony traps leaving the rear of the premises.
    Kind regards,
   Clifford Hargreaves.

I also found a book which may be of interest to local historians. It’s a first edition (as far as I can make out) of Michael Davitt’s “The Boer Fight for Freedom”. It was printed in the USA in 1902, I would imagine because it would not be very popular in the UK! There is a dedication inside signed by Michael Davitt. The book could be in better condition externally but there are amazing illustrations of key players in the conflict. I plan to read it before doing anything with it.

Hi Bryan
Can I ask a big favour?  In among all the family photographs I have been sorting in the last few weeks I found one of my cousins Carmel and Thomas. I have not had any connection with them since their parents divorced, many years ago, so they don’t really know me and may not be interested in making contact. I know my mum regularly visited their mum, so perhaps they would. One of the reasons for contacting them is that I have several photographs of their dad, which they have probably never seen. I would happily scan them and send them to them if they wanted. It would be better if they contacted me, rather than anyone who knows them, as it is their private decision, but it would be helpful if anyone who knows them lets them know about this request.
Mike Ryan

A couple of wedding photos for Dusty Miller and my Great Aunt Mary (always known as Aunty Mary). In her later years Aunty Mary live on Pleasant Street with Grandma and Grandad Feeney.
Mike Ryan.

Last batch of photos with Dusty Miller. I have vague memories about being told of a farm, but not really sure where. It could have been where the reservoirs are now over Grane.

The photo of Dusty Miller with the horse and cart is a bit different from his smart dress in uniform but he still projects a massive personality.

The family group is Grandma and Grandad Feeney on the left, dad sitting on the floor, his sister Mary (always known as Winny for some reason beyond my understanding) next to him, mum on Great Grandma’s knee, then Dusty and Aunty Mary. Dad was born in 1914 and mum in 1923, so that puts the photo mid to late 20’s. Any inside knowledge on likely locations would be very welcome.
Mike Ryan.

Hi Bryan
In among old photographs that I found at my sister’s house were the attached scans. I presume they are of E Lancs Regiment. My Grandad Feeney served in the E Lancs, as did my mum’s Uncle Charles (Dusty) Miller who became CSM. I have photographs of Dusty and Aunty Mary which I will scan when I find time. One of the photographs looks as if it may be a pre-Memorial Gardens service of commemoration.

Robert was the Communications Officer on the "John Biscoe" He made many visits to Antartica. The ship would often stop off at the Falklands Isles and Bob had many friends there. At xmas time 1981 Bob was telling us that there was going to be trouble with Argentina. Returning from Antartica the John Biscoe picked up marines in Montevideo Uruguay and dropped them at Port Stanley. Facing overwhelming odds when Argentina invaded, the marines had no option other than to surrender. The conflict then escalated into war.

Robert (Bobby) was well know to lots of us and used to live at No.3 Brook Street (off Hud Hey)

The following information is kindly supplied by Stephen Haines (Pupil) - 9th July 2018
This is the first school photograph I ever had taken.  It was taken outside the school gate, on Gregory Fold in 1961, when we were five or six years old.  I remember us being lined up on benches, though the taller boys, in the middle row, had to stand.  In those days, Gregory Fold had cobbles from what was then the Big Tree, on its junction with Helmshore Road, to the end of the school when it became a rough track that went down to Holcombe Road, at the bottom.  This picture was taken where the rough track began.  It is housing now, but then behind the school was open fields sloping down to the river in the valley below.
The teacher’s name was Mrs Pickup.  I remember her with great fondness, as she was a kindly lady who really looked after us – or so it seemed to me.  She was the one who taught us how to read and write properly and I remember her classroom had posters around the walls of all the letters we had to make, with pictures showing something that began with that letter – A/a for apple etc.  She taught us numbers as well and I remember she had a saying about the number 5, which she described as a “big fat policeman with a hat on top”.  We had to do our writing in books in which each row had three lines.  We made the lower case letters from the bottom line to that in the middle and the upper case ones to the line at the top.  This way we learned to make our letters different sizes.
In the spring and summer, when the weather was nice, she’d take us on nature walks up Musbury Valley and show us the different trees, flowers and birds and tell us something about them.  I particularly remember her kindness when we had to go for our inoculations and jabs.  This was something that held us young ones in trepidation and she used to bring in a tin full of what she called toast, but I guess was some sort of homemade crisp bread.  She’d tell us that, if we didn’t cry, we could have some toast as a treat and she was good as her word.  Even then, it seemed rare for a teacher to bring in things to give the pupils, which is why it sticks out in my memory.  I remember resolutely trying to fight back the tears so that I could get my hands on the toast, which always seemed to taste so nice.
Next to Mrs Pickup, on the left of back row, is Stefan Koman.  Next to him is Noel Pilling, then me, and I don’t remember the name of the next boy.  The fifth boy on the row is Johnny Smithson, then comes Kevin Kerr, Richard West, Norman Constantine, Philip Abbott and, finally, Peter Edmundson.
On the left of the middle row is Martin Nuttall.  Next is Tony Barnes, Philip Cheatham, Alan Carr, Billy Hanson, Robert Oldfield, Paul Mellor, James Walker and Eric Grey.
Of the girls, on the left is Stephanie Knight.  I can’t remember the name of the next girl, but the third girl in is Anne Priddle.  Next is Carole Beardsworth, Sheila Skupsky, Dorothy Ratcliffe, Brenda Holden, Susan Haygarth, Stephanie Watson and, finally, Susan Burke.

The following information is kindly given by Stephen Haines (pupil) and submitted here on 9th July 2018.
This is a photo of my class at the primary school, but before I joined it.  I joined the school at Easter in 1961, when I was four years old.  I was the youngest in my year group throughout my school career, both at primary and secondary schools.   The people in this picture were in the class when I arrived and must have started in September of 1959.  It is probably what would be today known as the reception class.
I don’t remember the teacher.  She certainly didn’t teach me when I arrived.  I also don’t remember the girl next to her, but the second girl in from the left is Carole Bond.  Then comes Dorothy Ratcliffe.  I can’t remember the fourth girl in the row, but next to her is Carole Beardsworth.  Next to her is Brenda Holden and I can’t recall the last girl in the row.
The first boy, on the left, is Norman Constantine.  I don’t know the boy second in the row, but third sits Alan Carr.  Then is Billy Hanson, Martin Nuttall, Philip Cheatham, but I can’t remember the name of the last boy in the row.

It was taken on the climbing frame which can be seen in the general photo you have used for the title page of the blog (I think I can spot myself).  It's the same era.  I think it was probably summer 1958 or thereabouts.  I was at the nursery for two years whilst my mum went to train as a teacher in Manchester.  My Grandad used to take me to nursery and collect me afterwards.  We often called in at the Liberal Club on the way home where I 'helped' him stoking the boiler with coke and generally getting in the way of the men playing billiards and dominoes!  I remember bits about the nursery - the camp beds for naps of course and the teacher (seems she was probably the headteacher) who I always thought was called Mrs Kayli (or cayli?  the sherbet dust!) now I find she was called Miss Kaylor!
I look forward to seeing this blog develop.
Thanks again for your efforts, they're much appreciated.

Alison

Hello again,
Attached is another picture of Hillside Nursery which I believe was
taken at the same time as the one I sent a few days ago (see photo below), around 1957.
This one shows a number of pupils and staff although they are not easily
identifiable.
My Dad was the caretaker at the Nursery, a job he took up after retiring
from the police. The only names I can remember among the staff are Mrs.
Lord, who was one of the teachers, and Miss Kaylor who I think was the
Head.
In this picture, you can see the Toll House, which I think was still
occupied at the time, and the farm, (Pilling's?), on the Old Road.
Hopefully, this might bring back memories from former pupils.
Regards,
David Bates

Hello,
I have some photo's taken at Hillside Nursery, I think around 1957. I am
attaching one of them to see if any of your members can identify the
children in the picture. I'm the one second from left, but I can't
recall any of the others.
If they are of interest to your members, I could dig out the other
pictures and send them on to you for inclusion on the site.
Regards,
David Bates

(14th June 2018 - Memory notes kindly offered by Steve Haines (Pupil in the photo)
This photograph above is of our class a couple of years earlier than the one above, so I guess we’d have been five or six years old.  The teacher is Mrs Winstanley, who taught the very early years’ class.  I’d date this picture around 1960.
Going from left  to right on the back row: I don’t remember the name of the boy standing next to Mrs Winstanley, but stood next to him is Philip Abbott.  Then comes me (Steve Haines),Norman Constantine, Kevin Kerr, Richard West and Stefan Koman.
On the second row of boys, stood on the floor and again going left to right, are Noel Pilling, Johnny Smithson, Alan Carr, Tony Barnes, Paul Mellor, and Robert Oldfield.  I can’t recall the name of the boy third from right, but next to him is Martin Nuttall and finally comes Peter Edmunson.  He was the younger brother of Ian Edmunson, who has posted the next three photographs in the series.
Of the girls seated on the third row, the first is Carole Dowd.  I can’t remember the name of the next three girls, but the girl fifth in the row is Jeanette, whose surname I’ve lost.  Dorothy Ratcliffe is sixth in the row, next to Brenda Holden, Sheila Skupsky, Wendy Howarth, Carole Beardsworth and Stephanie Knight.

Stephanie Watson is the first of the girls kneeling at the front, on the left.  Next comes Anne Priddle, Susan Haygarth, Jackie Tremble and Carole Bond.

INFORMATION REQUEST FROM CHARLOTTE PARKINSON (8TH JUNE 2018)

Ive been trawling through your blog on Haslingden/Helmshore to try and find some information on a house that was demolished to make way for the by pass in Helmshore in 70s .

My grandad had a petrol station at the top of Dean Road off Helmshore Road I think it was later called Jubilee Garage.  My grandad was Bill Moorhouse  (Im sure he was in round table)  who was also an undertaker/ taxi driver and I can remember playing in some buildings behind the petrol station which had rolls of carpets in so he probably sold those too!!

We lived at the bottom of the terraced houses on Dean Road  on left hand side as you go down (I cant remember the number)  , the land opposite used by someone who kept chickens.  I was born in 1969 and around then Dean Road was a dead end that backed onto fields.  There was a track from the end of the terraces that led to a house in the fields I think to the east to a house called Fiveways which was compulsory purchased to make way for the by pass.   My Auntie Mary Evans lived there and I spent a lot of my early childhood there.

The purpose of my email is I wanted to try and find some history about that house Fiveways and if possible some pictures as it meant such a lot to me and has a lot of happy memories.    I wondered if you could help or knew anyone who could point me in the right direction.

Kind Regards
Charlotte Parkinson

Here below is information kindly shared with us by Stephen Haines (Pupil in the photo)
This is a photograph of our class when we were about eight years old.  The teacher was Mrs Pilling, who was certainly a teacher of the old school.  I remember her as a formidable lady, quite strict, who would punish misdemeanours with a ruler across the hand, and across the back of the legs for greater crimes.  I felt it on more than one occasion.  Yet, she knew how to encourage her young charges.  She had a system of stars, used in other classes too, of various colours, the highest valued being silver and gold and there was a healthy competition to try to achieve them.  I looked forwards to going up to her class because we would begin subjects like history and geography.  At the time I’d no idea what they were, but their mysterious, grown-up names sounded far more exciting than the reading, writing and sums we did lower down the school.  She was a brilliant teacher and I learned a lot from her lessons.  We had a reading book that had vivid coloured drawings on one side and text on the other, and I was so impressed that I got my mum to buy me a copy so that I could read it at home.  One of the things she got us to read was extracts from the “Song of Hiawatha” by HW Longfellow.  Hiawatha became one of my childhood heroes and because of it I changed sides when watching Westerns.  I began supporting the Indians and not the Cowboys.   I can’t imagine any teacher nowadays trying to get eight-year-old pupils to read such challenging stuff.  She did and, fifty-odd years later, I can still recite chunks of it from memory.  That’s a good teacher.
To the class:  back row, going from left to right we have Stefan Koman, Noel Pilling, me, Richard West, Philip Abbot and Norman Constantine.  On the second row is Peter Edmundson, Alan Carr, Paul Mellor, Tony Barnes, Billy Hanson, Robert Oldfield, Martin Nuttall and James Walker.  He doesn’t appear in the other photographs that I’ve written about, but his family lived on Broadway, on the left-hand side as you go up the hill from the junction with Lancaster Avenue.  He became known as “Judd” and played in goal for the Helmshore Youth football team I played in.  Last on the row is Kevin Kerr.
The girl on the left of the front row is Stephanie Knight and next to her is Susan Burke.  She didn’t stay long in the class with us, her family moving away, but at the time they lived on Raven Avenue.  Next to Susan is Wendy Howarth and then comes Brenda Holden.  Her family lived, I think, in the Holcolme Road area of the village.  Next is Dorothy Ratcliffe and I can’t remember the name of the girl to her right, but she might have been called Carole Busky.  Then comes Carole Beardsworth, Jeanette, whose surname I can’t recall, and Sheila Skupsky.  She was another whose family moved out of the area and didn’t stay long in the class.  Finally sits Anne Priddle.  Anne was one of a large family who lived in a big house on the corner of Mayfield Avenue and Helmshore Road, in Flaxmoss.
Of the front five girls, Jackie Tremble is on the left.  Then comes Carole Dowd, Stephanie Watson, Carole Bond and Susan Haygarth.  (Again, I hope I’ve spelled the Caroles correctly.)

Information kindly shared to us by Stephen Haines about his classmates in the photo:

Starting with the front row, the boy on the left is Peter Edmundson.  Peter had two older brothers, John and Ian, and a younger sister called Janet and they lived on Broadway, in the second house of the first semi as you turn left out of Brooklands Avenue.  His father was called Ernest and he was a butcher in Accrington, whilst his mother was Vera and she worked in the research department at TMM, Wavell Mill, on Holcombe Road.  They had a Rover 90 car, the biggest vehicle in that part of the village, at a time when most families didn’t have cars.
The girl sat next to Peter is Susan Haygarth.  She had an older brother called Brian and they also lived on Broadway in a house before Devon Crescent is reached, opposite what is now the High School.  Then it was fields.  Next to Susan is Martin Nuttall whose family lived on Helmshore Road.  Theirs was the first house of the last semi before you reach the drive into St Veronica’s church.
The girl in glasses on the left of the second row is Jacqueline Tremble, who lived somewhere in the Lancaster / York Avenue area, and she is sitting next to Robert Oldfield, often known as Ockey.  He had an older sister and they lived on Gregory Fold, in the last house in the row of stone cottages opposite the primary school.  His family often spoke of having seen or heard apparitions and it was widely accepted that the house was haunted.
The boy poking his head from behind that of Susan is me, Stephen Haines.  At that time, I had a younger brother called David – Stuart, the youngest, came along several years later – and we lived in the terrace on Brooklands Avenue, at no. 12.  My father was Arthur, who worked as a conductor for the bus department of Haslingden Corporation.  He had arrived in Haslingden in 1939 as a war-time evacuee from Salford and his family followed him here a little later.  My mother, Marion, was a weaver at Barlow’s Mill, off Holcombe Road, and her family had arrived here from Blackburn in the mid-1930s.
The boy next to me was Philip Cheetham and I remember little about him as he was not in the school long as his family out of the area.  I cannot work out who the others in the photograph are, though the girl at the very back, also in glasses, is I think Dorothy Ratcliffe.  If so, she is, again I think, the person who posted this photo on the website.  I think she lived on one of the streets right off Lancaster Avenue, as you go up.
The school milk was always delivered to the Gregory Fold side of the school and it was the job of the older boys, which we were not, to bring it inside.  I always preferred the milk in winter, when it was cold.  On really cold days, such as during the harsh winter of 1963, the milk froze and we thought it was like having ice cream.  I summer it was not so nice, as it was often warm and sometimes began to curdle.

The following information is kindly shared to us by Stephen Haines one of the pupils in the above photo:
This is the same class as in the picture above, but several years later.  The teacher was Mr Hartley and I don’t remember much about him other that he left the primary school at the end of the school year and took a post at Haslingden Secondary Modern School, where some of those in this picture would have re-encountered him when they transferred there in 1966.
The boy at the left of the back row is Stefan Koman.  He had siblings and his family lived on Broadway, in a house halfway up the hill, as the road rises after its junction with Lancaster Avenue.  His father had arrived from Poland after the war and his mother was Jenny Walkden, who had been a school friend of my mother’s.  Not long after this photo was taken, they moved to Accrington.
Next to Stefan is Richard West, who had an elder sister and who lived on Holcombe Road, in a house on the left as you go towards the Italian restaurant, then the White Horse.  I don’t know the boy next to him, but the fourth boy is Noel Pilling.  His family lived on York Avenue, on the left near to its junction with Helmshore Road.
I am next to Noel and next to me is Martin Nuttall.  Next to Martin is Norman Constantine.  His family lived in one of the stone cottages by the river at the end of the drive that runs alongside Helmshore Memorial Gardens.  I don’t remember the name of the boy standing next to Norman.
The boy on the left of the middle row is Philip Abbott, who had a sister and who lived on Somerset Walk, on the right as you go up.  Then comes Peter Edmundson and then Alan Carr.  Alan also had a sister and his family ran Higher Cocker Farm, mainly dairy, but with a few pigs and poultry.  I remember the farm was a good place to hang around on Fridays, as that was baking day and his mother made fantastic cakes.  Rossendale Golf Club bought the farm soon after this picture was taken and they moved away.
The fourth boy on the row is Robert Oldfield and next to him is Billy Hanson, the biggest boy in the class.  His family lived near to the top of Granville Street.  Next to Billy is Paul Mellor, who later became Paul Chadwick.  He lived somewhere in Flaxmoss, around Mayfield Avenue, and next to him is Tony Barnes.  Tony lived on Helmshore Road, in a house opposite St Veronica’s, and I remember that whenever Corgi brought out a new model car, he was always the first to get it.  He was often to be seen racing his cars down the playground at the back of the school.
The boy second from the right Kevin Kerr, whose family lived on Devon Crescent and with whom I later played football for Helmshore Youth.  By then he’d acquired the nickname Hector, presumably after the Derby County player.  Last on the row is Johnny Smithson.  He had a sister called Anne and his family also lived on Holcombe Road, near to Richard West.  His father worked at Higher Mill.
The girl on the left of the front row is Susan Haygarth.  Then comes Jackie Tremble and next to her is Wendy Howarth.  Her family lived on Holcombe Road, somewhere opposite its junction with Bell Alley.  I can’t remember the name of the girl fourth on the row, though I think the fifth girl was called Jeanette, but I cannot recall her surname.
The next girl is Dorothy Ratcliffe and then comes Stephanie Knight.  Her father was called Ernie, who, like my father, worked for the Corporation.  They lived in the Flaxmoss area.  Next sits Carole Dowd, who lived in the Lancaster Avenue area and next to her is Stephanie Watson.  She had an elder brother called Graham and they lived on Brooklands Avenue, on the right near its junction with Raven Avenue.  The family later moved out of the area.
Second from right on that row is Carole Bond.  She lived somewhere around Holcombe Road, in the Higher Mill area, and her family moved to Blackburn sometime later.  The last girl on the row is Carole Beardsworth, though I can’t remember where she lived.  (I hope I’ve spelled the Caroles correctly.)

Now that it has been confirmed that Helmshore Textile Museum is to re-open next month we would like your help. Haslingden Roots and Haslingden Old and New have agreed to help the Museum to try and find people who worked there who could share stories and pictures about life in the Mill when it was in production. We have already supplied lots of details we hold and we are now looking for the more personal stories of the workers. If you can help please let us know and let's get this bit of our history documented before it's too late. This picture shows workers from Middle Mill a long time ago. Don't you just wish we could interview them today !!

Notes on Haslingden Swimming Baths - thanks to Marie Ives for kindly sharing with us  (29th March 2018) I will shortly add these notes to the new Swimming Blog:

When the baths were opened in 1936 my dad was unemployed and had time on his hands, so he attended the baths over the following months and taught himself to swim.  In later years when my brother, myself and cousin Bryan were old enough he took us along to the baths, we got used to the water but we couldn't swim, so we were made members of the swimming club.  We also went with school groups once a week, in the last year or two at St. James.  Our teacher at these sessions was Mrs. Doris Redmond and she was as I remember very strict with us.  When you had swum a length you were given a small black and white piece of tape for Mum to sew on your costume so that everyone knew you could swim.  I preferred going to the Swimming Club on Thursday evening where there was a more relaxed feeling.  Dad always went with us and had a swim later on, he wore a proper swimming costume with muscle back spaces at the back, it was navy blue.  When the club was doing well in the league a year or two later, he bought a pair of the teams green and white cotton trunks.

There was always a lot of children there from Rawtenstall, as there was no swimming pool there.  The pool was open until 8 o'clock on some nights and was always full of lots of children.  Most of my friends could swim and we always enjoyed going to the baths.  If I remember rightly at that time the entrance fee was 2d for a child and 4d for an adult, and it costs 1d to borrow a towel.  If you won a race at the annual gala you maybe the luck winner of a 6 month contract that enabled you to get in free.

We played teams from other towns on a regular basis, as well as going to these towns to play a return match.  We went to Burnley, Blackburn, Preston, Lancaster as well as others.  We went to Blackpool Cocker Street baths and I always remember this as the water was saltwater.  When we had done our swim we didn't stay to cheer our men on in the polo match, we always went off to find the nearest chip shop.  The coaches we went on were nearly always George Hoyle's and we always had a sing song on the way home.

The schoolboys medley race was always the first event, one boy swimming 50 yards breaststroke, crawl, backcrawl and then the last one 100 yards crawl.  Next came the ladies 50 yards breaststroke, then 50 yards crawl, 50 yards backcrawl and 100 yards front crawl.  The men followed with the same races.  Then the ladies and men's squadron races, Then came a short interval before the polo match.
Some of the people I remember from the boys races are Eric and Steven Moden, Sean White, Colin Wallwork, Peter Jenkins, Alec Fearfull, Harry Moore, Gordon Barnes, Bryan Gudgeon (cousin), Ralph Clark (brother).  The men I remember are - Norbert Honey, Tom and Jim McIntyre, Tony O'Connor, Robin Touhey, Jack Warburton, Jimmy Dunne, Richard Barlow, Jack Ashton, Albert Holden and Gerard Conboy and other ones I have forgotton - sorry!  My memories of the ladies and girls - the Hayman sisters, Gladys Dunne (later Touhey), Florence Green, Gillian Bowman, Angela Honey, Moya White,  N.McIntyre, Pat Lythe, Audrey Byers, Winifred Nelson, Molly McGarrigan and many names I cannot remember - sorry.

When it was the Annual Gala usually September or October there was always a fun session when the men dressed in silly clothes and jumped off the high boards and made big splashes, and there was a Mills and Workshops race as well.

I have a battered programme for the 10th Annual Gala - 1951, price threepence, I can try to copy it if you want one Bryan, let me know.  I also have the original committee picture that I lent to the RFP some years ago, that is on facebook, as well as my Dad holding his prize that he won for the verans race (this is in one of Chris Aspin's books)  I also have a photo of my sister Jeanne and her swimming team with trophy, I think this must be an early one as she only looks about 10 or so, they must have gone to the pool as soon as it was opened, as she was born in 1927, she would be about 9 or so when it opened and I wasn't even born - shshsh!  This picture is a bit blurred, but if you wana copy I will do my best.  The people on it are also named on the back.  I have just found four of dad's membership cards and with committee details if you are interested let me know and I'll pass them on.

Signed: Marie Ives

Haslingden County Secondary Modern School Annual Cross Country
As I remember the Cross Country event always started up on Poplar Street then crossing the road at the top and then after a while went up left by the side of the old "Toll Bar" now showing in a bad state of repair (and opposite the farm which at one time was known as a "Mink Farm", proceed up the incline to the top and then go out the track which leads by the side of the large TV mast, and just past there you came to a farm which those days had the lovely Mr and Mrs Whipp who so kindly provided the runners with light refreshment. You then proceeded down past their farm and ran over the disused quarry area and back down onto the back lane (Haslingden Old Road?) then you crossed over by Fred's farm and down the footpath and on to Hillside Road.

"The Dynamites" or "Second Time Around"
The photo is a rehearsal for the Dynamites re-union at the Astoria, an event organised for Charity by Tony Winder of Rawtenstall. What a superb band they were. Proud to have been associated with such great lads
Gerard Navan (lead), Noel Smith RIP (at the back on drums), James Turner (RIP) on vocals at the front, and Jack Tillotson on the right (plays bass) - don't know what had happened for Ronnie Green (Rhythm) to be missing from this photo.
Photo: Kindly shared to us by Peter Fisher.

Gerard tells us that the absence of Ronnie on the photo was because he turned up late that night and the photographer was in a hurry because he had another appointment, and so Ronnie who did eventually arrive missed out!!

Noel Smith (RIP) the drummer from the Dynamites had previously been with the group MARK DAY AND THE KNIGHTS who later became the NOSMO KINGS.  Also the singer of that group Peter Hibbert (RIP) who was the lead singer (eg Mark Day) with both bands also for a short period became the singer with the DYNAMITES but later James Turner took over as singer.

A additional snippet kindly offered by Chris Haworth for inclusion in BANKING blog

"I used to run Eley Long Estate Agents which was the first shop on the left of Higher Deardengate (next to Jack's Butchers).  We had a sub-branch of the Leeds Permanent Building Society where people would come and pay their money in.  I would fill in their pass-books, put the money in a tin and at the end of the day pay all monies into the society's account at, I think, Barclays.
Just a little snippet for you - Christine

Another photo which shows Harry Wilkinson (fourth from the right)
Used to love helping him on the hen pen when a young lad and on other occasions
later on going with him and Bert Marsden and Harry Barton to Belle Vue Wrestling.
The best jobs were finding and then collecting the eggs, they took some finding
because they were always well hidden in the long grass at the
side of the railway track, all the time I was there I never actually saw a hen get
killed, but I am sure he did lose the odd one or two.  Most of laying birds what Harry had
were in battery cages.  I think the free range were probably birds coming to the end
and considered to be in semi retirement.
Asian customers would come down every Saturday and take away the old hens which
they got off Harry who would provide them with a old proven bag
to put the bird in cos they needed to keep the hens alive,
every now and again you would see the bag "twitching".
